Home Builders Foundation Raises Record $410,000 at Building Hope Gala

Portland, OR. Led by Honorary Chair Wally Remmers of West Hills Land Development, Home Builders Foundation raised a record amount to help end homelessness. Led by Honorary Chair Wally Remmers, owner of West Hills Land Development, this year’s Building Hope Gala & Auction was supported by leaders in the home building industry, including Metropolitan Land Group, Polygon Northwest, DR Horton, Emerio Design, Everett Custom Homes, West Hills Homes NW, Parr Lumber, and many more. Other philanthropic leaders such as Tim Boyle of Columbia Sportswear, Jeff and Linda Hargens of Northwest Earthmovers Inc., Randy and Naquel VanLant of Macadam Floor & Design, and Bob and Peggy Berwick of IWP also supported Home Builders Foundation with significant contributions to the event.

The Building Hope Gala & Auction drew a record 450 attendees to The Nines Hotel for a night of fundraising. Attendees had the opportunity to bid packages that included trips to Italy, Hawaii, Canada, and California, as well as unique experiences such as a duck hunt at Wally Remmers’ private duck club, a sunset cruise aboard a luxury yacht, and courtside section tickets to a Trailblazer game. 

Home Builders Foundation highlighted its partnership with the Good Neighbor Center, a shelter for homeless families with children in Tigard, during its special appeal. Home Builders Foundation recruited Mountainwood Homes to serve as the Builder Captain for this small project which added a three hundred square foot addition to the existing shelter, which is now used exclusively for children’s programming. Home Builders Foundation raised an incredible $114,000 during the special appeal thanks to the support of attendees as well as donors who were not in attendance.

Funds raised at the Building Hope Gala & Auction benefit Home Builders Foundation, a Portland-based nonprofit that builds and remodels shelters for those experiencing homelessness in the Portland metro area. Home Builders Foundation focuses on building and renovating shelters for those who are most vulnerable when homeless, including families with children, youth, and domestic violence survivors. Home Builders Foundation completes shelter builds and renovations by leveraging donations from companies in the home building industry and providing cash grants to shelter providers to complete projects.

This year’s Home Builders Foundation shelter projects include the completion of the Dorothy Lemelson House and New Meadows Program, which will provide supportive housing for at-risk youth aging out of foster care. Home Builders Foundation will also partner with Just Compassion of East Washington County to remodel a facility that will host a day services center for adults experiencing homelessness. Community of Hope, a shelter for homeless single parent families, will also receive assistance with renovations, courtesy of Home Builders Foundation.

Bank of America Boosts Nonprofit “All Hands Raised” With $200,000 Grant for High School Vocational Training in Construction & Manufacturing

Portland, OR. Bank of America is honoring All Hands Raised as its 2018 Neighborhood Builder winner. The nonprofit is being recognized for its commitment to education, equity and excellence from birth to career, and for their innovative work in mobilizing support to ensure young people in Multnomah County achieve their full potential. With this grant, All Hands Raised will fully launch a “Pathways to Construction & Manufacturing Careers” program in partnership with six area high schools, which collectively serve 12,000 students. The seeds for this work were planted through an initial partnership with two schools: Reynolds and Centennial high schools. After two years of focused effort at those schools, this work resulted in measurable success and enthusiastic support from students, educators and local employers.

Through the Neighborhood Builders program, each year the bank provides one Portland-area nonprofit with a unique combination of leadership training, $200,000 in flexible funding, volunteer support, and a network of peer organizations across the country. Last year’s winner was New Avenues for Youth.

Through Neighborhood Builders, we connect nonprofits like All Hands Raised to the funding and leadership development resources they need to further scale their impact,” said Roger Hinshaw, Bank of America’s Market President in Oregon and Southwest Washington. “All Hands Raised does extraordinary work, so I am very pleased that we’re able to bring forward this support at a particularly strategic time.”

“This $200,000 investment will strengthen our ability to create opportunities among our youth for long-term employment in living-wage careers, which is good for our kids and for our local economy,” said Dan Ryan, CEO of All Hands Raised. “We’re pleased that Bank of America is so invested in helping close the gap between high schools, training programs and industry — all while increasing options for students beyond just traditional four-year colleges, the military or low-paying service jobs.”

Ryan cited the more than 30,000 construction and manufacturing jobs that will be added in the Portland region over the next 10 years, combined with unprecedented levels of retirements. Yet the pathways to those careers are largely broken, incomplete or absent — and local career-technical education programs have not recovered from past cuts, nor fully aligned with the current needs of local industries.

“Building effective teams on-site in local high school communities that bring together students, parents, teachers, local employers and career training programs all around common goals, measures and improvement strategies is powerful,” says Ryan. “In sum, this well-timed investment by Bank of America will allow our local partnership to develop a stronger awareness among educators of the living-wage job opportunities in our community, and will truly be a game-changer for our local high school students and their families,” Ryan noted.

Portland, March 12th, 2016.  The Bank of America Charitable Foundation announced Willamette West Habitat for Humanity as its newest Neighborhood Builder recipient. The award combines $200,000 in flexible funding with leadership training for high-performing nonprofits and their executives.

Willamette West Habitat will use this new investment to launch its Critical Home Repair (CHR) program which offers home improvements for a low cost. The program will help preserve and ensure safe, decent, and affordable housing in our community.

“For more than 15 years, Bank of America has been both a philanthropic and volunteer partner with Willamette West Habitat for Humanity. We first came to partner with them when we sponsored a house early on. Through that experience, we saw first-hand that access to affordable, stable housing is critical to a family’s financial well-being, and that’s important for our overall community,” said Roger Hinshaw, Bank of America Market President for Oregon and Southwest Washington. “We’re pleased to again be partnering with Willamette West Habitat with this significant six-figure investment, so they can continue carrying out their important work throughout Washington County.”

Since its inception in 1988, Willamette West Habitat for Humanity has served more than 100 local families. To complement its traditional homebuilding programs, Habitat launched its Critical Home Repair program in Washington County, including Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard and Tualatin, and in parts of Clackamas County including Lake Oswego, West Linn and Wilsonville. Critical Home Repair helps individuals and families address critical needs in their homes by focusing on safety, accessibility and meeting municipal codes. By offering this program to several homes in a given community, it helps elevate an entire neighborhood in terms of revitalization efforts.

“We’re excited our new Critical Home Repair program will give people the opportunity to address longstanding repairs that were otherwise unattainable so they can safely live in their homes for a long time to come,” said Mark Forker, executive director of Willamette West Habitat for Humanity. “We’re very appreciative to have partners like Bank of America that share our vision and help provide the momentum to accomplish our goals for our Critical Home Repair program and engage more of our volunteers.”

A common misconception associated with the Habitat for Humanity organization is that the nonprofit simply gives houses away, when in fact homebuyers make modest, no-interest loan payments to Habitat and pay property taxes like any other homeowner. In 2015 alone, Willamette West Habitat families paid over $193,000 in property taxes and for every eight homes built in Washington County, over $1 million is added to the annual property tax base. Homeowners or “partners” as they are referred to by Habitat, work alongside volunteers to build their house, and others’ homes, and earn “sweat equity” along with the appreciation of seeing their dreams come to life.

Since 2004, the Bank of America Charitable Foundation has invested $183 million to more than 900 nonprofit organizations and provided leadership resources to nearly 2,000 nonprofit leaders through Neighborhood Builder and the Neighborhood Builders Leadership Program. Portland, March 7th, 2015. The 31st Annual Classic Wines Auction (CWA) raised almost $3.2 million for charities in Portland and southwest Washington. Former New England Patriots Quarterback and Proprietor of Doubleback Winery, Drew Bledsoe, was bidding during the live auction. More than 875 people attended the event at the Oregon Convention Center. Fundraising from this year’s auction, and related events, benefit five charity partners dedicated to helping youth and families in the metro area: Metropolitan Family Service, New Avenues for Youth, Friends of the Children-Portland, YWCA Clark County and Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel.

“With support from our incredible sponsors, donors, charity partners, winemakers and volunteers, we are able to significantly impact the lives of over 82,000 children and families in our community who are in need,” said CWA Executive Director Heather Martin.

Auction fundraising totals were announced on the heels of Wine Spectator releasing its annual list of the Top 10 Charity Wine Auctions in the country. The prestigious list is made up of major auctions from around the country, including events in Napa Valley and Sonoma.

“We are delighted to be recognized by Wine Spectator as one of the top ten charity wine auctions in the country. It’s a tribute to the generosity of our supporters and the importance of our fundraising efforts,” Martin added.

A wide range of packages, vintage wines and international excursions were auctioned off during the course of the evening. Following in the footsteps of the previous year, Kuni Automotive and Kuni BMW again donated two BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports cars. Two bidders in Portland each paid $160,000 for the cars, raising $320,000.

Other auction items included a luxury trip to Tuscany; wine tasting tours in France and Germany; trips to Pebble Beach, Calif., Whitefish, Mo., and the U.S. Open; and a heli-skiing vacation in the Canadian Rockies, among other packages.

Next year’s auction is scheduled for Saturday, March 5, 2016.
